Information
reaching The ICON Newspaper revealed that the peace of one of Nigeria’s
respected higher educational institutions, University of Benin, UNIBEN,
Benin City, Edo State may have been threatened following allegations of
gross abuse of public office trust, privileges and monumental fraud
against the vice-chancellor of the institution, Professor Faraday F.
Osasere Orumwense, by a group, UNIBEN INTEGRITY GROUP.
According to a petition signed by one Alexander Egunatum, sent to President Muhammed Buhari, and copied Senator Effiong Bob, the pro-chancellor and chairman, Governing Council of the university, the group alleged that in just a few months since Prof. Orumwense took over the helms of affairs of the university, he has succeeded in turning the institution into a private business empire.
The group alleged that the university over the years has developed a systematic and due procedure for the award of contracts to all manner of competent contractors without hitches or hue and cry about due process and transparency. The group alleged that the reverse has become the norm. The group further stated that the acting Director of Works, Engr. Otens on instruction of the vice-chancellor and his wife, Mrs. Orumwense has now limited the award of contracts to a few specific contractors, chief amongst who is one Tonyparker & Associates that has been awarded 80 per cent of all the contracts this year alone.
The group further stated that the Tonyparker & Associates is the official contractor of Prof. Orumwense and his wife. The contractor pays them 15 per cent upfront on any contract awarded it, and these amounts are paid to the vice-chancellor’s wife. According to the group, other contractors who also pay upfront for any contract awarded to Mrs. Orumwense are Brightstar Nig. Ltd, Swag Ltd, Gousame Nig. Ltd and FSS Martins Ltd.
Stressing further on the fraudulent awards of contracts in the university, the group averred that the acting Director of Works and the Director of EMC have contract agents who shop for businessmen and women in town and elsewhere, soliciting that they bid for contracts and pay 15 per cent upfront to the vice-chancellor, Prof. Orumwense, leaving out already established contractors who ordinarily should be awarded such contracts, simply because they cannot put up such proposals to them.
Citing a case in point, the group mentioned the renovation of the buildings at Engineering Faculty which was ‘sold’ to a regional manager of First Bank of Nigeria. It was alleged that the said manager paid 15 per cent of the contract sum upfront to the vice-chancellor, Prof. Orumwese and the acting Director of Works; the manager has been telling all who care to listen that he is yet to be paid despite his payment upfront.
